A home based business or any business for that matter can fail in spite of an increase in production. By increasing the production of sub-standard products or producing products at higher cost, you cannot increase the profitability of your home based business. What then is productivity? Productivity is a measure of quality output from a production process, per unit of input. For example, labor productivity is typically measured as a ratio of output per labor-hour, and input. Hence to improve the productivity of your business and make money you have to adopt certain strategies.

1. Failure is Not an Option:

Though your home business is up and running you may not be very happy with the progress. Your desire is to improve the productivity of your business and succeed. First and foremost you have to decide that you are never going to quit working from home under any circumstance. Remember that Quitters don’t win and winners don’t quit. Failure is not an option for you. So prepare yourself to meet all challenges and overcome them.

2. Prepare a Plan:

Many new entrepreneurs take a long time to succeed or even fail in their efforts to run a business from home simply because they do not have a plan. Think of the day you started this business and remember that when you started you had some idea about why you started this home based business and how much money you hoped to make. This can be your immediate goal and probably you would like to make some more changes too. o­nce you set your goals, put it in writing and prepare a master-plan that will indicate how and when you will be able to achieve your goals. In addition have a short term plan that will show in detail your daily work schedule and your immediate goals. With these plans in hand you will realize how easy it is to work fro home systematically and achieve your goal.

3. Improve Knowledge and Skills:

Once you have your plan in place, you will realize that there are certain grey areas that need more attention and possibly more knowledge and skills. You will have to find ways and means of upgrading your knowledge and skills or obtain the assistance of a friend who is knowledgeable in this aspect. You can also consider employing someone to work o­n a part-time basis till you are able to do things o­n your own. Up-grading your knowledge and skills has to be an o­ngoing process. Thus you will be able to keep abreast with the latest developments in your field of activity and improve the productivity of your home based business.

4. Prioritize:

The daily work schedule or To Do list can sometimes be overwhelming. At first sight it can be so frightening; you might not get started at all. With a long list in front of you, you are lost as to where to start and when to finish. The o­nly way to get over this is to prioritize the tasks. This is done by studying the tasks that have to done in the order of urgency and importance and arranging them in your order of priority.

5. Avoid Procrastination:

One of the biggest obstacles that stand in the way of progress and productivity of a business is procrastination. The tendency to procrastinate sets in when there are jobs that are difficult to handle or when there is a Burnout. Do the easier jobs in your priority list first and take o­n the difficult o­nes at the time of the day when you are fresh and mentally active. If you cannot handle them get help from others but do not procrastinate. Similarly you can avoid burnout by soliciting help from family members and friends. These timely actions will help you to improve productivity and avoid stress.

6. Proper Time Management:

When running a home based business, there can be all kinds of interference obstructing or delaying your work. To avoid this allocate specific times for household chores and avoid visitors and friends and telephone calls during your working hours. With effective time management you can get much more done each day, avoid stress and enjoy working at home.
